You must have been in a situation where:
- had a few days off or a long weekend,
- you had a fixed budget to spend,
- but you had no idea where to go?
I used to look at the prices of 15-20 cities one by one and hope to find the best deal. Today, there are much simpler methods - and one of my favourites is the flexible search, designed specifically for the “spontaneous traveller”.
Classic vs. flexible search - what's the difference?
The best way to understand the power of flexible search is to compare it with the traditional method. Imagine you have a long weekend in March and you want to go somewhere. The two methods approach this situation with completely different logic.
| Search criteria | Traditional search | Flexible search |
|---|---|---|
| Where from | Budapest | Budapest |
| Where to | Paris | Anywhere |
| When | 15-18 March. | Any time in March (or “next 6 months”) |
| Result | 45 000 Ft | 50 different destinations, sorted by price |
So you can immediately see that you can go to Athens for 22.000 HUF, while Paris is 45.000 HUF - and maybe Athens is what you never thought of before..
Flexible date search - the spontaneous traveller's best friend
One of the most valuable features of Kiwi (and other modern flight finders) is the “Anywhere” search and flexible date selection.
- open the search engine below
- select your city of departure (e.g. Budapest)
- the destination should remain “Anywhere”
- if you are flexible, choose the “Anytime” option, just set the length of stay in days
- the search results in a series of small cards showing how much each city costs - click on them to see the flights
Personal experience: how I found Mallorca in winter
I did exactly the same thing a few years ago. I knew I wanted to go hiking and see nature, but I didn't want to pay a fortune for the classic winter hiking paradises (Iceland, Norway). I set up the viewfinder:
- from: Budapest
- where to: anywhere
- Date: february
The result: Palma de Mallorca for 24 000 Ft (round trip). Everyone thinks of summer when they think of Mallorca, but in winter there are beautiful hiking trails in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, hardly any tourists and the airfare is half the price of summer. I've done fantastic hikes while others have frozen in Iceland for three times as much.
Tips to get the most out of it
- be open: if you're too specific (“Lisbon is the only good one”), you won't feel the power of this search. But if you say “any sunny, warm city”, you suddenly have 20 options.
- look at the map: many search engines show prices on a map. If you see that a neighbouring city is much cheaper, you can take a train/bus from there to your original destination.
- book quickly: if you find a good price with a flexible search, others will probably find it too. The best deals go fast.

You can try these features in the search box below and see the results.
⚠️ Important: The search results will be displayed on our site, but the booking will of course be made on the Kiwi website.
